LITERATURE AND THE ENVIRONMENT

Course Objectives
1. To introduce learners to environmental humanities through environmentally
conscious literature.
2. To introduce learners to a variety of ecologically oriented literary works of
diverse genres to enable them to use their knowledge of literature and
environment.
3. To introduce learners to the conceptual and analytical tools for appreciating
literary practices from an ecocritical perspective.
Course Outcomes
At the end of the course the learner should be able to:
1. recognise and appreciate the multiple concerns and themes expressed in
environmental humanities.
2. demonstrate a deeper understanding of the different modes and formal strategies
of representation of nature in literature and are able to analyse, articulate and
creatively respond to environmental crises.
3. possess the ability to employ appropriate critical strategies to analyse the
multiple ecological and ideological dimensions of representations of nature
and environment.
